Formula SAE ETS

FSAE West, day 2

Justin Fontolliet, Thu 16 Jun 2011

Weather: Drizzle in the morning clearing up at lunch, sunny and clear afternoon.

Day 2 was a particularly busy day. The team was on site at 6:50 am for the gate opening at 7:00 am.

Right at the opening, the ETS team got the car in line for refuelling. After the tank got filled, the team headed for the tilt test, where the car proved leak-free for inclination angles up to 60 degrees from horizontal. This got us our second tech sticker.

The team then headed for the other side of the facilities for the noise and brake tests: the F2011’s exhaust tip emitted 107 DB from 50 centimetres, which is 3dB less than the maximum allowed. Then, Benoit Vaillancourt strapped himself in to prove the inspectors that the car could lock its 4 wheels upon braking. The test was passed at first try, a proof of the system’s rules compliance. At 10:00 am, the car was back in the paddocks with all its tech stickers on, one of the first cars in the competition to reach this status.

At 11:00 am, the team attended its turn at the design presentation event, where judges from the automotive world evaluated the team members’ level of comprehension and the car’s finish quality and engineering level. The event went flawlessly for ETS.

At 2:00 pm, the car was scheduled for cost evaluation, where judges from the production engineering world evaluate the car’s cost and manufacturability. Justin Fontolliet and Jean-Frédérik Kardos handled the event just fine.

At 4:00 pm, Benoit Vaillancourt headed for the business presentation event, where each team must “convince” a group of “investors’ (judges) to finance the production of Formula SAE cars. He did a great performance.

At 5:30 pm, the Design finalists were announced and ETS was one of them! The team rushed to the Design event for the 5:40 pm scheduled design semi-finals. The team delivered a solid performance, setting great hopes in a good overall score for the competition.

At 8:00 pm, the team members left the competition site to get some rest and to prepare for the dynamic events. Day 3 will bring the Acceleration, skidpad and autocross events.
